Betting College Football College Football has some of the same common characteristics that College Basketball has. For starters, you have 70-80 games to pick from on a given Saturday. I have never understood the reason why people felt they had to get action on the Thursday, and then Friday night game. Those games were designed for Vegas, for people to lose. Very little value is found in those games, while a Saturday can present all types of opportunities if you do your homework. Homework can = $, since there are so many games there are going to be soft lines out there. Not necessarily on the Marquee games per say, but focus in on some of the smaller schools, who aren't getting all the press clippings every week. The Toledo's, and UAB's of college football. People get blurred vision, and think if it isn't on National TV, and its not Miami vs Florida State then who cares. Bottom line is your in this to make money, if you want entertainment go to the circus. There are many things to look at when your handicapping a college football game. Let me discuss some of the ones that I use for my handicapping aresenal. Also let me note, that some of these also apply to handicapping sports in general. As an ex-player up to the college level, I never rule out the human element, or letdown factor. When a team is coming off a huge win/upset always take into consideration that a letdown could be in the making the following week. They go back on campus and they are everybody's hero's that week, they watch all the highlights, and read the newspaper clippings. What's happens then, is all of the sudden next Saturday is upon us, and we are not prepared to play as we have been dealing with all these other distractions. We are coming down from that high and feeling a letdown. Find teams who are strong on the offensive line. I don't care who you are, if you don't have the horses up front to block, it could be a struggle. Note Oklahoma was returning only 1 of 5 starters on their offensive line, and look at the struggles they had with BYU. 13 pts. ! granted Bradford went down, but this a team that scored 50+ last year like it was nothing. Look for teams who are good in the Pass Efficiency department. Passing yardage can be misleading at times, as some teams may hit a long strike, or they may accumulate most of there yards when the game has been put out of reach. It is important to go back and look at this very closely, or you may be mislead on the game played out. Obviously, some things are out of even the best handicappers control, such as turnovers and injuries. The hope is that if your doing your homework, and putting in the time to find favorable handicapping situations, then things will still work in your favor in the long run. Look for teams that are prone to the turnover bug. How do they fair when they have 3 turnovers in a game ? Are they able to overcome turnovers and still find a way to win, or better yet, find a way to cover ? One last thing, people always ask me about playing parlays when wagering. I am more conservative when it comes to this concept. I is hard enough to win 2 out of every 3 wagers you place, let alone worry about winning 3 out of 3. People think of the get rich quick scheme. Patience is very important in handicapping, and you are going to have losing streaks. In 2008 I suffered some of my worst losing streaks in my 14 years of handicapping. Stick with the program.
